Internal search

Search is a conversation between the user (and the website or app) and the site/app. The search query is used by the user to find information. The website or application then responds through the search results.

The key factor in a positive user experience on websites and mobile apps is search usability. Particularly those that offer a large number of options. This blog offers some great insights and design tips to make internal search intuitive and simple.

What is Internal Search?

The function of browsing content within a website or app to show it to the user based on his or her search query is called internal search. It provides the fastest way to find what the user is looking for if it is done correctly. The internal search helps users save time and effort, enhances usability and desireability of digital products, and supports user retention and conversion rates. It is easy to see why this element is so important.

A search field is the interactive element that allows for internal search within the user interface. Search fields, also known as search boxes or search bars, are the interface elements that allow users to enter their search query and find the relevant content.

Why is internal search so important?

The internal search was available from as little as 100 to 200 pages on the site. Modern users have many resources and can access thousands of options on the web and in app stores. Your task is to provide the visitor with what they need as quickly as possible. Users, especially those who are directed by external search engines, often arrive at a resource with a particular goal or query. They don’t want to spend too much time searching for it. They can make their search focused and efficient.

Do you need a search bar?

It is possible to agree that a smaller website, or one with less content (less than 100-200 pages), is better without the search box.

As the site or app gets larger and more complex, however, a search bar is essential. Site search is most commonly used on e-commerce websites, where users are searching for specific products.

Site search bars take over the central role of the UI on large e-commerce websites. According to a study, over 30% of site visitors will use the site search bar tool because it will motivate shoppers to find exactly what they are looking for.

Search box should be located in the most visible area

It is the placement of the magnifying glass or search graphic control in the interface that determines its location.

The magnifying glass search field is usually placed in the header of a website. This is a great place to put the search function.

It is best to place the search engine box in the area with the greatest visibility. This section allows users to quickly navigate to the desired pages by placing the search box there.

Many people visit large eCommerce websites with a specific goal in mind. They want to find a particular item in the store by using the search feature. Imagine users are unable to find the item quickly and easily on the search results page. If this happens, there is a high chance that visitors will leave the site and decrease its profitability.

Also, it is important to consider the power of mental models and habit. Users are used to searching for information on websites that include search in their headers.

Visitors will also likely not use the search function if the area is hidden below the fold (the part of the page visible only after scrolling down or in the footer).

Both sections can work, especially if there isn’t a sticky header. Scrolling to the footer will allow users to access the search function without having to go back.

The Core Features of an Effective Search

While there are many ways to make the search interfaces clear and intuitive, the following three points are the most important for internal search.

  1. Instantly visible
  2. Clear as a search function
  3. Show relevant content

You should allow users to customize search if it is an essential function of your application or part of the user’s workflow. Users may be able to modify the result page layout, color and fonts, limit how many results appear on a page, save filters or customize sorting parameters, or add call-to-actions.

Consider how user preferences, past queries, preferences, and other information can all be used to improve your search experience.

Keyboard shortcuts

It would be much easier to navigate through search results using a set of keyboard shortcuts.

Offer filter and sort options

Search terms that appear to be irrelevant or overwhelming can cause users to feel overwhelmed. Users can filter and sort the data to narrow down their search terms.

Relevance Indidicators

Relevance indicators can help you make a decision faster depending on what type of content, the accuracy of the results, and the size of the gap between the relevancy of results.
