UI or UX, which one do you need to learn first?
You should study UX first and UI second. Here’s why. UX is more important than UI when it comes to designing. It is very logical to learn UX first and UI second. This is because a basic understanding of UX can help you design a UI that better suits the user’s needs and wants. It doesn’t matter how beautiful your interfaces are. It won’t be a good UI design if they don’t solve a problem for a user or business.
UX is the first course you take. You will learn how to create a customer journey through user research, creative workshops, and concept validation. After that, it’s easy to create the UI design.
What is UXUI design?
Let’s start with the basics: What do UX and UI mean? These people are talking about two professions that, despite being around for decades and theoretically for centuries, are now defined by the tech industry as UX and UI design.
UX design is “user experience design” while UI represents “user interface design”. Both are essential to the product and must be used together. However, their professional relationships are not mutual. They refer to completely different aspects of product development and design. Let’s define each term individually before we discuss the differences between UX & UI.
What is User Experience (UX) design?
User experience design refers to a human-first approach to designing products. Don Norman, a cognitive scientist who co-founded the Nielsen Norman Group Design Consultancy, is credited for coining the term “user experiences” in the late 1990s. Here is how he describes it. “User experience” refers to all aspects of an end user’s interaction and interactions with the company, its products, and its services.
Here’s a quick overview of UX design.
- The process of improving and developing the user experience between a user’s company and all its facets is called User Experience Design.
- Although user experience design can be considered a non-digital practice (cognitive science), it is used and defined primarily by digital industries.
- UX design does not focus on visuals. It focuses more on the overall experience.

What is the user interface (UI) design?
Although it is a more established field, the question of “What is user interface design?” can be difficult to answer due to its wide variety of misinterpretations.
User experience is a collection of tasks that optimize a product for efficient and enjoyable use. However, user interface design complements it; it is the appearance, presentation, and interactivity of a product.
However, it can be confused with UX by the various industries that employ UI designers. In fact, different job postings will often refer to the same profession as totally different things.
Job descriptions and job advertisements for user interface designers will show you a lot of interpretations of this profession. Sometimes they extend to branding design and even frontend design.
You will find User Interface Design descriptions in “expert” definitions that are almost identical to User Experience Design.
Learn one from UI and UX
Let’s suppose you only have one option for learning UI or UX. Should you choose UX or UI? As any UX designer will tell you, it depends. It all depends on your experience as a designer and what goals you have.
The experience you may already have is first. It will be much easier to get into UI design if you are already a graphic designer. To become a specialist in UI design, you could study UI.
This allows you to have multiple types of experience in different design fields and work experiences. You could also be a painter, artist or psychologist for UI design.
Your goals are another factor influencing your decision on whether you want to learn UI first or UX later. Although I strongly believe that UX should be learned first, some goals could change my advice. One reason might be that you aim to be a UX or UI designer. It doesn’t matter if UX or UI is your first subjects. It is essential to understand the relevant role for you.

What’s the difference between UX and UI design?
UX (User Experience) design is focused on creating a positive experience for the user. It’s about understanding user behavior and preferences, and making sure that their interactions with your product or service are easy, efficient, and enjoyable. This includes researching users’ needs, testing designs, improving usability, and validating solutions.
UI (User Interface) design is concerned with how a product looks and feels; it’s the visual representation of the product/service. UI designers create responsive interfaces, icons, buttons, graphics, layouts, and fonts – all the visual elements that make up an interface. UI design aims to create a visually appealing and intuitive experience for users.
In conclusion, UX design is about creating a positive user experience, and UI design is about creating an aesthetically pleasing interface. Though they are often used in tandem, there are key differences between the two fields. Knowing which one to focus on depends on the kind of product or service you’re developing. By understanding both UXUI design, you can create products that provide users with a great experience and look beautiful and easy to use.
