“Usability testing”, “User testing” “User Experience testing” or “UX testing” are common phrases often used interchangeably. In UX testing, a researcher, known as a facilitator or moderator, instructs participants to perform tasks. While participants complete each task, the facilitator observes their behavior and listens to their feedback (1). It’s advisable to record the meeting and review it later, especially if you encounter challenges or need to recall the user’s response. UX testing is a critical aspect of user-centered design. This process not only allows us to evaluate the usability of our product from the user’s perspective but also provides insights into the user’s needs and satisfaction. (2)

What Is User Experience Testing?

The process of assessing a product’s simple use and enjoyment is called user experience (UX) testing. Through UX testing, we can identify areas where users may face problems with the product, providing valuable understanding of ways to enhance or improve the user experience.

According to the Interaction Design Foundation, UX is “a field of user research in which evaluators assess the quality of a user’s experience with and perceptions of a system.”

By using UX testing methods, we can assess anything from websites, and apps to physical products. Typically, during the development phase of a product, and after releasing the assessment of  the performance of the product, identifying any potential problems users may have with a product, and improving the quality of the product and the overall user experience, UX testing is used (3)

Why Is User Experience Testing Important?

The importance of UX testing is completely tied to the value of good UX (2). Creating beautiful, user-friendly products demonstrates the value of good UX Design. There is a huge difference between companies that take UX design seriously and those that don’t. (4)

In overall, by using UX testing, you can:

  • Gain more information about the behaviors of the target users when they interact with new products or services, and identify their expectations for the overall experience.
  • Be sure that the design functions work as intended and can meet all the user’s needs.
  • Identify problems in the user’s experience early to prevent damage to the brand reputation and avoid wasting time and money for both the company and you.
  • Find opportunities for innovation, and improve areas where users face challenges. By considering this situation, not only can you continuously enhance your products and services, but you can also fill gaps in the market. In the end, the brand remains competitive with other brands steadily.

In the end, UX testing brings you closer to your users, allowing you to better understand their experiences. When users have a positive experience with a product or service, they become loyal and stay with the brand. This process leads to a positive brand reputation, higher conversion rates, increased sales and revenue, and helps secure the brand’s competitive edge. (2)

Types of UX Testing:

Depending on your resources, target audience, and research goals, before choosing a user research methodology, you must decide what kind of testing you require. (5)

The three types of UX testing are as follows: Qualitative vs. Quantitative, Remote vs. In-Person Testing

  • Qualitative vs. Quantitative

The number of participants for UX testing is entirely related to the type of study. We recommend using 5 participants for a typical qualitative usability study involving a single user group to identify the most common problems in the product. (1)

  •  Qualitative Method:

This method is not only more common than quantitative UX testing but also the best for discovering user experience problems. The goal of qualitative UX testing is to gather information about people’s usage of the product or service through observations, results, and anecdotes. (1)

  • Quantitative Method:

The goal of quantitative usability testing is to gather data that describe the user experience. Task success and time on task are two of the metrics that are most frequently gathered in quantitative usability testing. To get benchmarks, quantitative usability testing works best. (1)

  • Remote vs. In-Person Testing

Among remote and in-person methods, the former is more popular than the latter due to the reduction in time and cost. Remote UX testing has two approaches: moderated and un-moderated.

Remote Method:

Remote moderated UX testing is similar to in-person studies. In this method, the researcher or facilitator asks participants to perform their tasks; however, the facilitator and users aren’t located in the same physical location. Generally, moderated tests are conducted using screen-sharing software like Skype or GoToMeeting (1).

Remote un-moderated UX testing, similar to moderated or in-person tests, does not involve the same facilitator-participant interaction. To set up written tasks, the facilitator uses a specific online remote-testing tool for the participants (1).

How to Write User Experience Testing, and Run It:

For making a good UX testing script, your script has to indicate these points:

  • Clear objectives: The tasks should be understandable for any users testing the usability of the product or service.
  • Based on your peer feedback, the UX testing script must be reviewed.
  • Be mindful of the UX testing time; ideally, it should not exceed 30 minutes.
  • Before implementing UX testing with users, you should conduct a preliminary test with one of your colleagues. The actual test should be divided into these parts: Introduction, Background Questions, Tasks, systematic observation, and Wrap-up.

1.Introduction:

The first step is to “Ensure that your UX testing script is clear.” If the user is participating in testing for the first time, create a comfortable environment for them. Prior to the test, provide a thorough explanation of the entire process they will be going through. Adopt a friendly manner and clearly describe the purpose of the UX testing script. This approach will assist the user in performing their tasks honestly and attentively. (6)

2. Background Questions:

After introducing your team and yourself to the participants, gather some essential information about them, including:

  • Their position and the work they do there.
  • Asking demographic questions-be cautious not to delve into private or unnecessary information.
  • Their experiences with similar goods to yours.
  • Their experience with this UX testing platform.
  • Any additional information relevant to your testing.

This data will aid in understanding more about the factors that influenced their experience during the testing.

TIP: Explain the objectives of this UX testing, emphasizing that the goal is to evaluate the usability of the platform for users. Make it clear that the focus is on assessing the performance of the platform, not passing judgment on the participants as they perform tasks. (6)

3. Scripting the Usability Tasks:

The success of your test is tied to the variables or factors you have selected, as well as the chosen method for your UX testing.

  • Generally, it is advisable to opt for a maximum of eight tasks. Keep in mind that these eight tasks will provide valuable insights into your product. However, it’s a good idea to reserve additional hypotheses for subsequent rounds of usability testing.
  • Keep in mind, based on quality assurance (QA) concept, do not just focus on the niche of your product.
  • Avoid interrupting users or providing a pathway for their tasks. Instead, explain to them where they need to arrive and observe if they can achieve it without your guidance.

TIP:

By recording the voice of users when testing the product, you can provide significant benefits. Hearing their thought process may lead to a deep understanding of their reason behind any issues. (6)

4. Systematic Observations and Probing Questions:

In this step, as participants interact with a product or service and diligently complete their tasks, it’s crucial to carefully probe their behavior, possibly by asking questions. This approach allows you to gain a deep insights into the reasons behind their actions. If quantitative data serves as the basic outline, the qualitative insights derived from observation and questions add vibrant color to the overall understanding. (6)

5. Wrap-up Questions and Feedback:

After participants have completed the test, employ follow-up questions (7). These questions provide valuable information about the user experience during the test, allowing you to maximize the opportunity to collect important details and feedback from the user.

Aim to Ask Follow-up Questions about:

  • Their general opinions of the UX testing and the product.
  • What aspects of the product are good or bad?
  • Overall difficulties they had with the tasks.
  • Anything they wanted to say throughout the exam but didn’t.

The Benefits of UX Testing:

Having information about user experience and their feelings when using a website, app, and product is an undeniable concept for organizations. In the digital world, user experience is a key factor in the success of any product or website.

By analyzing the users’ interaction with your digital assets in UX testing, you gain the valuable insight, and this can lead to major improvement. (8)

By improving the user journey, and solving these problems, the business can increase their rate, and grow immediately. (8)

  • User-Centric Design:

Usability testing allows for a more user-centered approach to design. Businesses can learn about their customers’ requirements, behaviors, and motivations by incorporating them into the testing process. This deeper understanding enables the progress of user-centered solutions and experiences, which leads to increased user happiness and engagement. (8)

  • Improved Brand Reputation:
